In 2019, East Butler Schools adopted the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment, or more commonly referred to as the DESSA. A measure of behaviors related to resilience, social-emotional competence, and school success for children. All students in Kindergarten through 12th grade will have assessments completed. This will help the school identify students that need additional instruction and training in specific social emotional learning (SEL). See the attached document for more information.

Second Step is the curriculum the counselor and teachers use to teach and practice social emotional learning (SEL). All students in grades K-6 receive weekly lessons that affirm the importance of empathy, emotion regulation, decision making, and problem solving. Learning how to become better people is important for family and friend relationships, school and work environments, and building strong communities.

Family Connection
We encourage all Second Step skills be practiced at home. To include our families, students will bring Home Link assignments home. Older students will need to have the assignment signed by the adult they practiced with and returned to school. Letters are sent home at the beginning of the year with a link and activation key to gain access to Second Step resources at home. They are also provided below and can be found on YouTube.
